The Fox News Decision Desk called the race for Talarico shortly after eleven Tuesday night, Eastern time, Fox reports. Talarico, a state lawmaker and former schoolteacher, beat Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a strong ally of the president, Fox says.

Talarico's win marks the first time a Democrat has won a Senate seat in Texas since 1988, the BBC reports. It helped Democrats take full control of Congress in a wave of wins across the country, the BBC says.

“We just took back Texas,” Talarico said at his watch party in Austin, the BBC reports. “We just proved that all the money in the world is no match for the people of Texas,” he said, referring to Paxton's backing from Elon Musk.

Musk put $158 million into a super PAC supporting Paxton's campaign, the BBC reports. The BBC says the race grew to become the most expensive Senate race in history, with more than half a billion dollars spent.

Trump chose to back Paxton over longtime incumbent John Cornyn earlier this year, Fox reports. Republicans in Washington had believed Cornyn would be the better candidate in a hard year for the party in power, Fox says.

Talarico painted Paxton as unfit to serve, citing allegations of corruption, Fox reports. That included Paxton's impeachment by the Texas House, Fox says. He was later acquitted by the Texas Senate.

Political scientist Quardricos Driskell of George Washington University called Paxton an “objectively terrible candidate,” the BBC reports.

What we know: Talarico won the race, the first Democratic Senate win in Texas in decades.
What we don't: The final vote margin, which is not stated in the cited reports.
