Trump said he and Netanyahu “made a deal months ago that we’re stopping” and that the money would get “cut off at the end of the year,” NBC News reports. He spoke in a phone interview with Fox & Friends on Tuesday, NBC says.

Trump said the idea was Netanyahu's, NBC reports. In January, Netanyahu said he hoped to taper off American military aid over the next decade, NBC says.

“We’ll help Israel if they need it — you know they’ve been a great ally,” Trump said, according to NBC. He said Israel has become a very successful country and that it does not need the money.

Under a memorandum of understanding signed in 2016, during the Obama administration, the country agreed to give Israel $3.8 billion a year, NBC reports. The agreement is due to expire in 2028, NBC and CNN report.

CNN notes that it is the role of Congress to approve funding. It is not clear how the aid would be ended before the agreement runs out.

Trump said Netanyahu had agreed it would be appropriate for Israel not to receive the aid, the New York Post reports. Trump also said critics used the payment as a target, calling it “almost too easy a target,” NBC reports.

Trump and Netanyahu launched the war on Iran this year, NBC reports.

What we know: Trump says the aid will end at the end of this year under a deal with Netanyahu.
What we don't: How the aid would be stopped, since Congress approves the funding, and whether Israel agrees. Netanyahu's office declined to comment.
