Democrats win control of the House and the Senate
Democrats won control of the House in Tuesday's midterm elections, NBC News projects, and NBC also projects they will flip the Senate. Fox News reports Democrats reclaimed power in the Senate as the party won races deep in Trump country. The results end Republican control of Congress when the new session begins in January.
Democrats won control of the House of Representatives with what could be their largest majority in nearly two decades, NBC News projects. NBC's projection is based on an analysis that Democrats will win about 255 House seats. That estimate could still move by a few seats, NBC says, but it is well beyond the 218 needed for a majority.
NBC News has also projected that Democrats will flip control of the Senate, putting them in charge of the House and the Senate. Fox News reports that Democrats reclaimed power in the Senate even before every race was decided. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer had clinched five pickups as Tuesday rolled into Wednesday, Fox says.
The wave started in Georgia, where Jon Ossoff easily won reelection, Fox reports. It continued through North Carolina, South Carolina, Kansas, Iowa and Texas, Fox says. The Guardian reports that the Associated Press projected Democratic wins in Texas, Ohio, North Carolina and South Carolina.
In the House, the wave hit many Republican-held seats that Trump carried in 2024, NBC reports. Four Republican incumbents in Pennsylvania were defeated, NBC says. Democrat Richard Ojeda II beat Richard Hudson of North Carolina, who leads the House Republican campaign arm.
NBC says the results were widely seen as a referendum on Trump's policies, including his immigration crackdown, the Iran war and tariffs. The new Congress takes over on Jan. 3, NBC reports. It will be the first time in Trump's second term that he will not have full control of Congress.
Races in Michigan, Minnesota and Alaska were still outstanding as of the Fox report. Fox says Democrats would still hold the Senate even if they lose those races.
