Bottoms, a former Atlanta mayor, will succeed Republican Governor Brian Kemp, who could not seek a third term in a row, CBS News reports. The projections are based on unofficial results.

Her win returns the governor's office to Democrats for the first time in more than two decades, CBS and Fox News report. Republicans have held it since Sonny Perdue beat Roy Barnes in 2002.

She will also be Georgia's first woman governor and its first Black governor, CBS says. She once served as a city council member in Atlanta and as a magistrate judge in Fulton County, The Guardian reports.

Jackson, a billionaire health care executive, put more than $200 million of his own money into his campaign, Fox reports. The Guardian puts that figure at more than $100 million. Jackson beat Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones, who had Trump's backing, in a primary runoff.

Jackson had been favored to win until recent days, The Guardian reports. Bottoms campaigned with Senator Jon Ossoff, who also won reelection, and former President Barack Obama.

Bottoms ran on lowering costs, expanding Medicaid and exempting teachers from state income taxes, CBS reports. She also pledged to roll back limits on abortion access, The Guardian says.

Bottoms, 56, served as Atlanta's mayor from 2018 to 2022, then worked in the Biden White House as a senior adviser, the outlets report.

Libertarian Chase Oliver, the party's 2024 presidential nominee, was also on the ballot, CBS says.
