Democrat David Crowley projected to win Wisconsin governor's race
Democrat David Crowley has won the race for Wisconsin governor, NBC News and Fox News project. He defeated Republican congressman Tom Tiffany in the race. Crowley will be the first Black person elected governor of the state, and results are still unofficial.
Crowley, the Milwaukee County executive, will succeed two-term Democratic Governor Tony Evers, NBC News and Fox News report. The projections are based on unofficial results.
At 40, he is also the youngest person elected governor in Wisconsin in nearly a century, NBC reports.
Crowley overcame a big money edge for Tiffany, NBC says. Almost all of that edge came from three billionaire donors.
He ran on an affordability agenda to cut the costs of childcare, healthcare and housing, mostly through more state spending, NBC reports. He also spoke about growing up in one of the poorest parts of Milwaukee.
Crowley often linked Tiffany to President Trump and his policies, including tariffs, the 2025 tax and spending bill and the war in Iran, Fox reports.
“It is very clear that he is working for Donald Trump and the billionaires who are funding his campaign,” Crowley said during their debate, according to Fox.
Tiffany said Crowley was “consistently focused on being against Donald Trump,” Fox reports. “I'm for Wisconsin,” he said.
Crowley suspended his primary campaign in July while polling in the low single digits, then relaunched it 10 days later with Evers's backing, NBC says. He went on to narrowly beat state lawmaker Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist.
Former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Kamala Harris and Maryland Governor Wes Moore campaigned for him late in the race, NBC reports.
