Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate race to become first Muslim senator
Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has won the Michigan Senate race, defeating Republican Mike Rogers, Fox News projects and The Guardian reports. He will be the first Muslim senator in US history. Results are still unofficial, and the final count has not been certified.
El-Sayed, 42, a doctor and former Wayne County health director, declared victory early on Wednesday at the state Democrats' headquarters in Detroit, The Guardian reports. The projection is based on unofficial results.
“You took a chance on the unlikeliest of candidates,” El-Sayed said in his speech, according to The Guardian. “We know that America is big enough for all of us.”
“Enjoy your retirement,” he said of Rogers, according to Fox News. “You chose hate, and Michigan chose hope.”
Rogers, a former congressman backed by President Trump, lost the 2024 Senate race to Elissa Slotkin by about 0.3 percentage points, The Guardian says. The two men were running to succeed retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters.
El-Sayed beat Haley Stevens, the Democratic establishment favorite, in the primary, the outlets report. He backs Medicare for All and has called for an end to US military aid to Israel, The Guardian says.
Trump called El-Sayed a “jihadist” at a rally in Michigan last month, Fox and The Guardian report. The Guardian describes the campaign against him as largely Islamophobic.
Rogers backed Trump's tariffs and the war with Iran before breaking with the president on those issues in the final weeks, The Guardian reports.
More than $220 million had been spent on ads in the general election by mid-October, The Guardian says, citing AdImpact.
El-Sayed's win adds to a Democratic majority in the Senate after the party won control of the chamber on Tuesday, the paper reports.
What we know: El-Sayed is projected to win, based on unofficial results.
What we don't: The final certified vote totals.
Where outlets agree Fox News and The Guardian report El-Sayed defeating Rogers to become the first Muslim senator.
Where they differ Fox News says the pro-Israel group Aipac spent roughly $42 million against El-Sayed, while The Guardian says its super PAC spent roughly $30 million in the primary.
