Kenya's Health Ministry said a 65-year-old relative of the first Ebola patient died after falling ill in quarantine, AP, the BBC and The Hindu reported. Seven other patients remain in care at two isolation sites. Officials say the cases stay in one cluster with no community spread found.
The woman began showing symptoms about 10 days ago and was treated at an infectious disease unit in Nairobi, AP reported. The ministry said staff did everything possible to save her life, but she died Friday evening. A safe burial was being arranged with the family, AP said.
Kenya announced its first Ebola case on October 6 after a 40-year-old Kenyan man who had been living in Congo traveled through Uganda and reached Nairobi. He tested positive and died on October 5, AP reported. Authorities traced about 135 contacts of that patient and placed 118 in quarantine. Eight tested positive while in quarantine, including four health workers and four close family members, AP said.
The BBC said more than 4,000 people have died in Africa since Ebola was confirmed in Congo in May. The Bundibugyo species has no approved vaccine or treatment yet, though trials are under way, the BBC reported. Some contacts who finished 21 days without symptoms were set to leave quarantine starting Saturday, AP said. Nigeria is also probing its first case and whether it links to travel through Uganda. The Hindu carried the same ministry update on the second death and the seven patients still in care.
What we know: Kenya's second Ebola death was a 65-year-old relative who fell ill in quarantine. Nine cases remain in one cluster.
What we don't: Whether more contacts will test positive, or how Nigeria's separate case links to Kenya's first patient.
