Tesla is taking $50,000 deposits for its next-generation Roadster from buyers in the U.S., Canada and China, CNBC reported. All of the money is fully refundable, according to Tesla's website, MotorTrend reported.
A $50,000 deposit reserves a Roadster, MotorTrend said. Buyers pay $5,000 right away by credit card, and the remaining $45,000 is due within 10 days.
Tesla reopened reservations for the car in recent weeks, CNBC reported. The company first started taking $50,000 deposits for a revamped Roadster in 2017 but has since missed every targeted delivery date, CNBC said.
Tesla showed off the car Thursday night at a SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas, near Waco. The livestream started at 7:55 p.m. CT, CNBC said. Elon Musk said the Roadster will enter production in 2028, and Tesla did not announce a price, both outlets reported.
Tesla showed Performance, Thrust and Rocket versions, MotorTrend reported. CNBC said the company did not disclose specifications for the other performance-level versions.
In an apparently live demonstration, the car hit 60 mph in 0.81 second, MotorTrend said, adding that it did not know what tires or surface were used. Static displays at the event listed more than 1,500 horsepower, MotorTrend reported. Tesla says the car can top 230 mph, the outlet said, though Musk said the target top speed was roughly 380 mph. The stunts used 10 cold gas thrusters, a technology from SpaceX, the outlet said.
Musk said the Roadster will be the last vehicle Tesla makes that is meant to be driven by a human, CNBC reported. Tesla is scheduled to report third-quarter results after the bell on Wednesday, CNBC said.
