Broncos beat Seahawks 17-14 in overtime on Lutz's 53-yard field goal
Wil Lutz kicked a 53-yard field goal in overtime Thursday night to give the Denver Broncos a 17-14 win over the Seattle Seahawks. The kick came after Ja'Quan McMillian picked off Sam Darnold. Denver is now 4-2, and Seattle is 3-3, the AP and the Denver Gazette reported.
Ja'Quan McMillian intercepted Sam Darnold's pass in overtime Thursday night, and Wil Lutz kicked a 53-yard field goal to give the Denver Broncos a 17-14 win over the Seattle Seahawks, The Associated Press and the Denver Gazette reported.
McMillian picked off Darnold at the Seattle 43 on Seattle's first possession of overtime, according to the Gazette and the game's play-by-play. The Broncos gained just eight yards on the next three plays, but it was enough to set up the winning kick with 4:53 left in the extra period, the Gazette reported.
Denver led 14-3 at halftime on a 4-yard touchdown run by J.K. Dobbins and a 1-yard run by R.J. Harvey, who took a direct snap. Seattle then scored 11 points in the final 5 1/2 minutes of regulation, the AP reported. George Holani ran in from a yard out, and Darnold threw a 2-point pass to Rashid Shaheed. Jason Myers' 34-yard field goal tied it with 3 seconds left.
Denver's defense sacked Darnold five times, both outlets reported, and hit him 17 times, the AP said. Darnold completed 27 of 51 passes for 278 yards with two interceptions. Kris Abrams-Draine had the other pick late in regulation.
Broncos quarterback Bo Nix completed 17 of 27 passes for just 107 yards. "I don't know why we can't really push the ball vertically right now," Nix said, according to the AP. Denver had 168 yards of total offense, less than half of Seattle's 353.
"Defensively, we were magnificent," Broncos coach Sean Payton said, the AP reported. He added, "I'm a little bit of a realist to know that 4-2 could easily be 2-4."
The Broncos played without cornerback Patrick Surtain II and safety Talanoa Hufanga, who both have ankle injuries.
Denver improved to 4-2, and Seattle, the defending Super Bowl champion, fell to 3-3. Both teams play at home on Oct. 25: Seattle hosts Kansas City, and Denver hosts Arizona.
What we know: Denver won in overtime on a defensive takeaway and Lutz's long kick.
What we don't: How long Surtain and Hufanga will be out.
Where outlets agree The AP and the Denver Gazette both report that McMillian's overtime interception set up Lutz's 53-yard field goal for Denver's 17-14 win.
Where they differ The outlets cited here report the same key facts so far.
