Abbas delays first Palestinian elections in 20 years to 2027
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has postponed legislative elections set for next month until Sept. 11, 2027, and set presidential elections for the same day. Abbas blamed Israeli measures for the delay. Critics say it leaves aging leaders unchallenged and hurts the Palestinian Authority's credibility.
Palestinians will not vote next month after all.
President Mahmoud Abbas issued a decree pushing back legislative elections, which had been set for Nov. 28, to Sept. 11, 2027, DW reported. He also set presidential elections for the same day. They would be the first Palestinian elections in about 20 years.
In his decree, Abbas blamed "obstacles posed by Israeli measures" for the delay. He pointed to Israeli settler violence, military attacks and limits on movement in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. He said those conditions make "free, fair and inclusive elections" impossible for now, according to DW.
The vote would have revived the Palestinian Legislative Council, a parliament that was dissolved years ago, the Associated Press reported via ABC News. Palestinians last voted for a parliament in 2006. Hamas won that election. The split that followed left Hamas running Gaza and Abbas's Fatah party running parts of the West Bank.
Abbas, who is 90, has led the Palestinian Authority since 2005. His four-year term was supposed to end in 2009.
The delay "leaves entrenched Palestinian leaders unchallenged," CBS News reported. It also "threatens to further erode the Palestinian Authority's credibility among ordinary Palestinians and donor countries who fund it."
Western and Arab countries have pressed the Palestinian Authority to reform. Many see reform as key to any future role for the authority in Gaza after the war there.
No new date has been set for local votes. France 24's correspondent in Jerusalem said Abbas also cited the security situation in the Palestinian territories for the delay.
What we know: Abbas moved legislative elections set for next month to Sept. 11, 2027, the same day as a presidential vote.
What we don't: Whether the vote will actually take place on the new date.
