Critics cheer Cupertino, CBS's new legal drama about Big Tech
Cupertino, a new CBS legal drama from Robert and Michelle King, the team behind The Good Wife, opened Thursday night to strong reviews. Mike Colter and Rachel Keller play fired lawyers who take on Silicon Valley firms. It streams on Paramount+ for premium members now and for all members on Saturday.
CBS has a new legal drama about Big Tech, and critics like it. Cupertino premiered Thursday at 10 p.m. Eastern. It is streaming on Paramount+ for premium subscribers starting Friday and for all subscribers on Saturday, the Press Democrat reported.
The show comes from Robert and Michelle King, the couple behind The Good Wife, The Good Fight and Evil. Mike Colter plays Michael Price, a seasoned lawyer, and Rachel Keller plays Olivia Siffre, a newer one. Both are fired from a tech startup in the first minutes. They team up to fight for the "Davids" of Silicon Valley against the tech "Goliaths."
Joe Morton plays Michael's father, a celebrity lawyer with shaky ethics. Ella Stiller plays a scrappy receptionist who doubles as an investigator, and Busy Philipps also stars. Each episode has a new case, the Press Democrat said, from a coder blamed for a deadly drone crash to a teen on trial after an AI suggested ways to kill his father.
Reviews have been strongly positive. TV Guide called it the Kings' "latest winner" and said the pilot feels "fully realized." Its only complaint was a love triangle it called "distractingly out of place." The Press Democrat gave it 3 stars out of 4 and called it one of the brightest surprises of the fall season. Fangirlish said it belongs on "everyone's must-watch list."
The show had a 100 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes from its first six reviews, mxdwn reported, citing ScreenRant. It also said The Hollywood Reporter called it a "must-watch," while noting it may not reach the heights of the Kings' best work.
Critics read the show's view of tech differently. Fangirlish said it is "fiercely anti-AI." The Press Democrat said it takes a calmer approach than other recent stories about tech villains.
What we know: Cupertino is airing on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
What we don't: How many viewers watched the premiere, since ratings are not yet out.
Where outlets agree TV Guide and the Press Democrat both report that Mike Colter and Rachel Keller play lawyers fired from a tech startup who team up to take on Silicon Valley.
Where they differ Fangirlish calls Cupertino fiercely anti-AI, while the Press Democrat says it takes a more modulated, less outraged stance than other recent tech-villain stories.
