Speaker Mike Johnson will not seek to serve as House minority leader in the next Congress, Roll Call reports, citing a source familiar with his decision. Fox News reports that Johnson is telling his staff he will not seek to lead the House GOP.

The news comes after Republicans lost their House majority in Tuesday's midterm elections. Roll Call calls it a Democratic tsunami. Fox News calls it historic losses.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, has begun informing his colleagues that he plans to run for the party's top job, two sources said, Fox News reports. Roll Call reports he is expected to launch his bid on Wednesday, according to a person familiar with his plans.

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio will mount his own campaign to lead the GOP minority, Fox News reports. Roll Call reports that Jordan is also throwing in his hat, according to multiple reports.

The Republican conference is set to hold its leadership elections next week, Roll Call reports. A minority leader needs a majority of their own party, not of the full House, Fox News notes.

“While the outcome of this midterm is not what we’d hoped and fought for, a new battle is just beginning,” Johnson said in a statement, Roll Call reports.

“They should all step aside and let new people run,” one House GOP lawmaker said, Fox News reports. Representative Greg Steube of Florida wrote on social media, “The polls were not wrong. You were,” Roll Call reports.

Scalise has spent more than a decade in House GOP leadership, but past bids for the top job failed, Fox News reports. That includes his 2023 bid to succeed Kevin McCarthy.

Republicans are fighting over who will be President Donald Trump's top defender amid a likely barrage of Democrat-led investigations, Fox News reports.

What we know: Johnson will not run for minority leader, and Scalise and Jordan are moving to run.
What we don't: Who will win next week's vote, and whether other candidates will join the race.
