Jerry Jones defends Cowboys coaches and says pay doesn't drive wins
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stood by his coaches after Sunday's overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals, the New York Post and CBS News Texas report. On a radio show Tuesday, he said there is no link between what a team pays its coach and winning. The Cowboys are 3-5.
Jones spoke on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Tuesday morning, the New York Post and CBS News Texas report.
“There is zero correlation between how much you pay a coach or how many coaches you have as to winning,” Jones said, according to the Post. “So put that in your hopper and smoke it.”
It was not clear what data Jones used, the Post says. Coach Brian Schottenheimer makes $4.5 million a year, the paper reports, compared with about $12 million for Jaguars coach Liam Coen and $13 million for Bears coach Ben Johnson.
The Cowboys led by 14 points early in the fourth quarter on Sunday, CBS News Texas reports. Arizona backup quarterback Gardner Minshew then threw three touchdown passes, and the Cardinals forced overtime.
The defense again looked like a big weakness under first-year coordinator Christian Parker, CBS says. Schottenheimer was also questioned for seeming to play for field goals late in the game.
Jones said a rebuilding team can be inconsistent, CBS reports. “I like the way we're trending,” he said, according to CBS.
He also defended picking Parker, who had not been a defensive coordinator before, CBS says. Jones said Parker has exceptional skills relating with the players.
Despite their struggles, the Cowboys are still alive for a playoff spot in a weak NFC East, CBS reports. Jones said the team may look at adding players before the trade deadline but does not plan to trade anyone away.
Dallas plays at the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, CBS says.
