The John Frieda Hair Salon announced his death on its official Instagram account, according to The Independent. The statement said he died peacefully, surrounded by his family, the paper reports.

The salon called him more than a mentor and “a true icon of the hair industry,” The Independent reports.

Colorist Nicola Clarke, whose clients include Madonna and Cate Blanchett, said Frieda had died after bravely battling an illness, the paper says. She called him one of the most influential mentors in her life.

Frieda was born in London in 1951 and worked part-time in his father's hairdressing salon as a boy, The Independent reports. He set up on his own in his early 20s.

He became a household name through his haircare business, including the popular Frizz Ease range, the paper says. The business was acquired by the Japanese company Kao in 2002 for $450 million, The Independent reports.

In 1977 he married the singer Lulu, and they had a son, Jordan, before divorcing in 1991, the paper says. In 2019 he married Avery Agnelli, and they had two children together.

Cetera Lamb, creative director at the John Frieda salon in Mayfair, London, called him a “true legend” of hairdressing, The Independent reports.

Only The Independent has reported this so far, and NewsHabit hasn't seen independent confirmation.

The salon posted its statement with a black-and-white photo of Frieda, The Independent reports. “His legacy will live on in every single one of us,” the salon wrote.
