King Charles's former horse Point of Law wins the Melbourne Cup
Point of Law, a horse owned by King Charles until earlier this year, won the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, the BBC reports. Jockey Ethan Brown rode the colt past the front-runner Royal Supremacy late in the race. Trainer Ciaron Maher had the top three horses, the Guardian reports.
Point of Law, a horse previously owned by King Charles, won the 166th Melbourne Cup at Flemington on Tuesday, the BBC reports. The three-year-old colt was bought from the King earlier this year, the BBC says.
Ridden by Australian jockey Ethan Brown, Point of Law came from the middle of the pack and pulled clear in the final 100m, the BBC reports. Zahrann finished second and Juja Kibo third.
All three are trained by Ciaron Maher, the Guardian reports. He is the first trainer to fill the top three places, the Guardian says. Maher had a record seven horses in the race, the BBC reports.
Royal Supremacy, another of Maher's horses, led for much of the race before Point of Law reeled it in, the Guardian reports.
"Don't wake me up, this is every jockey's dream," Brown said, according to the BBC. "He's going to be a superstar horse. He's something special."
Brown spent six months out of the saddle after a serious fall at Flemington in 2023, the Guardian reports. "I was inches from losing my life, but a bit of time off and I realised I wasn't any good at anything else," he said, the Guardian reports.
Point of Law was bought from the royal stable by an Australian syndicate after winning the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket in July, the Guardian reports. The buyers include former AFL player Chris Judd and his wife Bec, the BBC says.
Before the race, one horse, Asterix, was scratched after a stable worker gave it the medication penetrene on Tuesday morning, the BBC reports. No treatments are allowed on race day. Trainer Chris Waller was reportedly fined A$50,000, the BBC says, citing the Age.
Robbie Williams performed before the race, the BBC reports.
