North Korea denies it was behind the record Binance crypto hack
North Korea has denied it was behind the hack of crypto exchange Binance, calling the allegations "absurd rhetoric," the BBC reports. Kim Yo Jong, the sister of leader Kim Jong Un, made the statement. The FBI has blamed a North Korea-linked hacking group for the theft.
North Korea has denied allegations that it was behind the record hack of cryptocurrency exchange Binance, the BBC reports. The BBC puts the theft at $6.3bn.
Kim Yo Jong, the sister of leader Kim Jong Un, said on Tuesday that the accusations were another "sinister attempt" by the US to damage North Korea's image, the BBC reports.
"It is a grave political provocation against the DPRK that the US misleads the international public opinion as if all the cyber crimes in different parts of the world are our deeds," she said in a statement, according to the BBC. CNBC reports that the statement was carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency.
The FBI has said the attack was carried out by a state-backed North Korean hacking group called TraderTraitor, the BBC reports. The group is also known as the Lazarus Group, the BBC says. Blockchain analysis firms Elliptic and Chainalysis have also linked the attack to North Korea-linked hackers, CNBC reports.
The hackers have moved the stolen money through thousands of wallets, CNBC reports. In the first four days after the attack, they used roughly 12,000 wallets across 11 blockchains, Elliptic said, according to CNBC.
About $2.85 billion has been frozen or seized, CNBC reports, citing Elliptic. Roughly $3.24 billion remains in addresses linked to the theft, mostly in bitcoin and ether, CNBC says.
A Binance spokesperson said to the BBC that a net $4.72bn has been withdrawn from the exchange since transactions resumed on Sunday. "Withdrawal levels are stabilising to what we would consider normal and expected on-chain activity," she said. Binance did not respond to the BBC's questions about North Korea's alleged role.
Binance said on Tuesday it would begin reopening withdrawals for more crypto assets across more networks, CNBC reports.
Where outlets agree The BBC and CNBC agree that Kim Yo Jong denied on Tuesday that North Korea was behind the Binance hack, which the FBI has linked to TraderTraitor.
