Gardner Minshew will be the Arizona Cardinals' starting quarterback going forward, coach Mike LaFleur said on Monday, ESPN reports. Rookie Carson Beck will be the backup. Jacoby Brissett, who had started every game this season, becomes the third-string quarterback.

Minshew replaced Brissett late in the third quarter on Sunday, ESPN reports. He led Arizona to a 33-30 overtime win over the Dallas Cowboys. Arizona scored touchdowns on all four drives Minshew led in regulation time. Chad Ryland then won it in overtime with a 42-yard field goal.

Minshew finished 17-for-23 for 188 yards and three touchdowns, ESPN reports. Brissett had gone 10-for-23 for 119 yards and was sacked four times before he was pulled. The win lifted the Cardinals to 3-5, CBS Sports says.

LaFleur said the switch was a gut call because he felt Arizona "needed a spark," ESPN reports. He said moving Brissett down was hard. "It's not a fun phone call," LaFleur said. "There's no book for that, obviously."

Minshew, 30, has played for several teams since he was drafted in 2019, CBS Sports reports. He made his first Pro Bowl in 2023 with the Colts.

Beck, a third-round pick this year, has been inactive for all eight games and has dealt with back spasms, ESPN reports. LaFleur said Beck is "feeling really good right now."

LaFleur said he spoke with players at other positions before making the news public, so they would not be caught off guard, ESPN reports. "I'm not worried about our locker room," he said.

LaFleur did not commit to Brissett's future with the team beyond this week, CBS Sports reports. Minshew is set to make his first start for Arizona on Sunday at Seattle, ESPN and CBS Sports report.
