Mamdani says Trump will grant visa to slain Bronx teen's mother
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani says President Trump agreed to grant a visa right away to the mother of Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old from Ghana shot dead in the Bronx, the Associated Press and Fox News report. She lives in Ghana. The White House had not confirmed it.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani says President Donald Trump has agreed to grant a visa to the mother of a teen who was shot dead in the Bronx, the Associated Press and Fox News report.
Javits Frimpong, 15, was on his way to school on Thursday morning when he was shot in the abdomen, city police said. He died at a hospital later that day. No arrests have been made, and police are still investigating.
Frimpong moved to the Bronx from Ghana a year ago to live with his father, said Ritchie Torres, a Democrat who represents the Bronx in Congress. His mother still lives in Ghana.
"Javits Frimpong's mother deserves to say goodbye to her son in person," Mamdani wrote on X on Saturday. "I just got off the phone with President Trump and he has agreed to grant her visa immediately."
The visa claim is Mamdani's account. The White House did not respond right away to requests to confirm it, the AP and Fox News report.
The teen's father, Thomas Frimpong, called his son quiet. He said he learned days before the shooting that the boy was being bullied at school. The principal had suspended two students, he said.
Ghana's foreign minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, welcomed what he called Trump's "timely decision," Fox News reports. He said Ghana will pay for the mother's travel and help with the funeral.
The AP notes that Trump has tightened immigration in his second term, including pausing visa processing for 75 countries.
What we know: Mamdani says Trump agreed to the visa, and no one has been arrested.
