Andreas Almgren of Sweden won the New York City Marathon on Sunday in his first race at the distance, NBC Sports and the Associated Press report. He finished in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 1 second, according to the Runner's World results. NBC Sports says he is the first Swede to win the race.

Almgren pulled away from Yemaneberhan Crippa of Italy in the final mile, the AP reports. Crippa finished 13 seconds behind. Kamohelo Mofolo of Lesotho was third, edging out defending champion Benson Kipruto of Kenya, the AP says.

Almgren won a world championship bronze medal at 10,000 meters last year, NBC Sports says. He is also the first Swedish runner to win any major marathon, the network reports.

Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya won the women's race in 2 hours, 24 minutes and 36 seconds, the results show. It was her second New York title after her win in 2024, the AP reports. She pulled away from fellow Kenyan Hellen Obiri in the final 150 meters, the AP says.

American Jess McClain finished second, six seconds behind Chepkirui, NBC Sports reports. She passed Obiri in the final strides and beat her by 41 hundredths of a second. NBC Sports says it was the first podium finish in New York for an American runner since Shalane Flanagan was third in 2018. Obiri, a two-time New York champion, was third.

American Zouhair Talbi was sixth, the AP reports, and Conner Mantz was 11th, the results show. Edna Kiplagat of Kenya, the 2010 champion, was fourth among the women at age 46, NBC Sports says.

Swiss racers Marcel Hug and Catherine Debrunner won the wheelchair races, NBC Sports reports. Hug beat American Daniel Romanchuk by one second.

About 60,000 runners were expected for this year's race, which marks 50 years since the course first ran through all five boroughs, Runner's World says.
