Aerosmith returned to the stage on Thursday at the Hollywood Bowl for its first show since cutting its farewell tour short about three years ago, the Los Angeles Times and Variety report. The band had stopped after singer Steven Tyler hurt his voice early in that tour.

The event, called California Dream On, ends with a second show on Sunday, the outlets report. Host Bill Burr welcomed fans to "the final two shows in Aerosmith's history," leaving many to wonder whether the band is truly done.

Foo Fighters star Dave Grohl played drums for most of Aerosmith's set, the outlets report. Johnny Depp joined on guitar for "Train Kept a Rollin'," and Joe Perry gave him part of a solo, Variety says.

Aerosmith's own set lasted about 45 minutes, closing a show of nearly four hours, according to Variety. The band sounded in top form, and Tyler showed no sign of his old vocal injury, the outlet says. The Los Angeles Times called the band "in surprisingly strong shape."

Before the end, Tyler spoke of "what a ride it's been with my brothers," naming Perry, Tom Hamilton, Brad Whitford and Joey Kramer. Kramer, who has had health problems, came out for the closing song, "Walk This Way."

Earlier, Guns N' Roses and the Black Crowes played sets of Aerosmith songs. Billy Idol, Sammy Hagar, Eric Church and Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson also covered the band's hits.

What we know: Aerosmith played its first show in about three years, with Grohl on drums.
What we don't: Whether Sunday's show will be the band's last.
