A Texas grand jury has indicted ICE officer Mario Alberto Morales, NBC News, the Washington Examiner and CBS News report. The charge is aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare says Morales drove into Miguel Parra-Hernandez during a chase in Houston earlier this month, the outlets report. Parra-Hernandez suffered a broken leg, the outlets report. NBC News and the Washington Examiner say Morales is 33. If convicted, he faces two to 20 years in prison, CBS News reports.

"The evidence that we have in this case is as clear as any that I've ever prosecuted or investigated," Teare said, NBC News reports. At a news conference, Teare played body camera video in which the officer says, "I was coming in and I hit him with the car," NBC News and CBS News report.

ICE has said Parra-Hernandez ran in front of the vehicle, the outlets report. An ICE spokesperson called the charge "nothing more than a political stunt by Houston sanctuary politicians," NBC News reports. ICE says only federal agencies can look into federal officers acting in their duties. Teare, a Democrat, says that is false, the outlet reports.

ICE says agents were looking for another man, who Teare says died years ago, the Washington Examiner and CBS News report. The outlets say this is the first indictment of an immigration agent in Texas. Parra-Hernandez is in ICE custody at a rehab center, NBC News reports.
