Stone Romberg, a metro Atlanta native, drowned off the Florida Panhandle after swimming out to free a seagull caught in his fishing line, Fox News and WSB-TV report. He died Sunday, the outlets report.

Romberg was fishing Sunday afternoon at Carillon Beach in Laguna Beach, Florida, near his home, when the gull got caught in his line, WSB-TV reports. He swam out to untangle it, but the hook and the bird got stuck on his hand, the outlets report. As he tried to swim back, a current carried him away and he drowned, Fox News and WSB-TV report.

Fox News, citing its sister station Fox 5 Atlanta, says Romberg was 31. He leaves behind his wife and two daughters, ages 1 and 3, the outlets report.

Romberg managed chair services at a local condominium complex, Fox News reports, citing the fundraiser page. Fox News says he was a big fan of SEC football and the Atlanta Braves. His workplace remembered him for his "kind heart, hard work, and willingness to always lend a hand," the outlets report. "His kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him, and he will be deeply missed," coworkers wrote online, WSB-TV reports.

A GoFundMe campaign was set up to help the family with hospital and funeral costs, WSB-TV reports. "Our hearts are broken for everyone who knew and loved him," the page reads, Fox News reports. The outlets gave different totals at different times. WSB-TV reported more than $80,000, and Fox News reported $138,714 as of Thursday afternoon.
