At a Fort Myers rally on Friday, President Trump said American warships coming back from Iran could stop off Cuba's coast, AP and PBS NewsHour reported. He said Secretary of State Marco Rubio could "finish up the deal."

Trump spoke at Alico Arena on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University while campaigning for candidates ahead of the November 3 midterms. AP said he first floated a Cuba idea earlier this year and had not pressed it in recent months. He revived it after a shouted question from the crowd about the island.

"We'll do a little stopover," Trump said, according to AP. "Actually, what we're going to do with Cuba is, we're going to come back from Iran. Those beautiful ships will pass Cuba. We'll have one of them stop about 50 yards off the coast. They'll raise up their hands. And then we're going to send (Secretary of State) Marco Rubio in to finish up the deal."

AP said Trump and Rubio have both pressed a harder line on Cuba. In May, Trump raised the idea of military action and said it looked like he would be the one to act. Rubio has said Cuba is a security threat because of ties to American adversaries, while also saying the administration wants a peaceful path if one exists, AP reported.

Voters have voiced worry about prices tied to the Iran war, from gas to groceries, AP said. Fox News covered Trump's Fort Myers stop and other midterm travel but did not lead with the Cuba remarks in the cited live update.

What we know: Trump said at Fort Myers that ships returning from Iran could stop near Cuba and that Rubio could finish a deal.
What we don't: Whether any ship movement or diplomatic plan is underway, or how Havana would respond.
