Tom Hanks is coming back to Broadway, this time as a writer as well as a star, according to The New York Times, Deadline and Broadway News.

Hanks will star in "This World of Tomorrow," a time-travel romance based on short stories he wrote, the outlets reported. He wrote the play with James Glossman, Deadline and Broadway News said.

Kelli O'Hara, a Tony winner, will star with Hanks, the outlets reported. Hanks will again play Bert, and O'Hara will again play Carmen, Broadway News said.

The play will open in fall 2027 for a limited run at a Shubert theater that has not yet been named, the outlets reported. Dates have not been set, the Times said.

Tony winner Kenny Leon will direct, Deadline and Broadway News reported. Leon also directed the play's first run at The Shed in New York in 2025, Broadway News said. That run sold out, Deadline reported.

The story is set at the end of the 21st century, Deadline and Broadway News reported. Bert keeps going back in time to one day at the 1939 New York World's Fair in Queens. There he learns that the future is shaped "not by technology, but by the choices we make for love," the outlets said.

"I'm so excited to continue this work on this amazing new American play," Leon said, according to Deadline and Broadway News. He said he looks forward to more people seeing "the onstage chemistry" of O'Hara and Hanks.

It will be Hanks' first time on a Broadway stage in more than 14 years, Deadline and Broadway News reported. He made his Broadway debut in Nora Ephron's play "Lucky Guy," which earned him a Tony nomination, the outlets said.

Hanks has won two Oscars, for "Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump," the Times and Broadway News reported.
