1Password lets AI agents sign in for you without seeing passwords
1Password launched a tool that lets AI agents sign in to accounts for users without seeing their passwords, Engadget and TechCrunch reported. Users get an alert and must approve each sign-in. Access lasts for one session only and covers only approved items, Engadget said.
1Password has a new tool that lets AI agents log in for you without seeing your password, according to Engadget and TechCrunch.
The new service is called 1Password for Agents, the outlets reported. It lets agents use logins saved in a user's 1Password vault, Engadget and TechCrunch said.
When an agent reaches a sign-in page, it sends a special digital key to 1Password to prove who it is, the outlets reported. The user then gets an alert and can approve the request, they said. 1Password fills in the login for the agent, TechCrunch reported.
Passwords and one-time codes stay outside the AI model, Engadget reported. Access is granted for one session, limited to approved items and not carried over, it said.
The tool works with agents including Meta's Muse, OpenAI's Dots and ChatGPT Work, Anthropic's Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Town, the outlets reported. TechCrunch said 1Password is working with other companies to add more.
Aashish Tripathi is the firm's product chief, Engadget reported. "An agent should be able to do the job it's been asked to do," he said, according to Engadget. But he said it should not get lasting access to everything in the account.
1Password pitched the tool for tasks like booking restaurants, buying gifts and planning trips, Engadget reported.
Engadget warned that agents can still make mistakes, such as ordering the wrong item. 1Password has not shared pricing or when the tool will be widely available, Engadget reported.
The launch came on the same day Axios reported that banks have begun to spot AI agents acting inside customer accounts, TechCrunch said. Most banks can't tell if the user asked for it, TechCrunch reported, citing Axios.
