Paris Saint-Germain winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will have surgery after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, the club confirmed Wednesday, BBC Sport, Sky Sports and ESPN reported.

The 25-year-old was hurt in a challenge with Barcelona's Xavi Espart in Tuesday's 4-2 Champions League win at Parc des Princes, BBC Sport reported. He could not put weight on his right leg and was taken off in the 59th minute. ESPN said PSG medical staff had to carry him from the field.

"Having suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during yesterday's match against FC Barcelona, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will undergo surgery in the coming days," PSG said in a statement quoted by ESPN.

The club has not given a timeline for his return. ESPN said such injuries usually keep players out for at least nine months, so his chances of playing again this season are slim. Sky Sports said he will miss PSG's Champions League trip to Aston Villa on Dec. 8.

Kvaratskhelia posted an emotional message on Instagram after the news. "I know I have to come back stronger for my people who always have my back," he wrote, as quoted by BBC Sport and ESPN. "I won't let you down."

The Georgia international joined PSG from Napoli in January 2025 and helped the club win back-to-back Champions League titles. Sky Sports said he has been shortlisted for the 2026 Ballon d'Or.

PSG also lost two other key players in the match. Reigning Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele hurt his left thigh, and captain Marquinhos hurt his right thigh, ESPN reported. The club said both will be out for a few weeks.

PSG sit top of the Champions League table after three wins from three games. They visit Lyon in a top-of-the-table Ligue 1 match on Sunday, ESPN reported.

What we know: Kvaratskhelia tore his right ACL and will have surgery in the coming days.
What we don't: How long he will be out, and whether he could return before the season ends.
