Anthony Edwards scored 45 points and hit nine 3-pointers as the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Miami Heat 131-106 on Wednesday night, according to the Associated Press and the Guardian. It was the season opener for both teams.

Edwards made 16 of 29 shots, including 9 of 17 from 3-point range, and had 10 rebounds, the Guardian reported. He joined Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan as the only players with at least 40 points in more than one season opener, the AP and the Guardian reported. Edwards scored 41 in last season's opener, the AP said.

His 45 points were the most by a Minnesota player in a season opener, the Guardian reported.

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 35 points in his first game for Miami, the AP and the Guardian reported. He made 13 of 19 shots, the AP said. Fans chanted "MVP" for him early in the game, the Guardian reported. He was called for a flagrant foul for elbowing Minnesota's Terrence Shannon Jr in the head, the Guardian said.

LaMelo Ball, also playing his first game for his new team, scored 21 points with six assists, the Guardian reported. He hit five 3-pointers, it said. Rudy Gobert grabbed 15 rebounds, and Jaden McDaniels scored 17, the AP and the Guardian reported.

Minnesota took control with a 23-7 run that started late in the second quarter, the AP reported. The run turned a one-point lead into a 78-61 edge. Edwards and Ball combined for 17 points during that stretch, the AP said.

The Timberwolves outscored Miami 63-24 on 3-pointers and outrebounded the Heat 52-34, the AP reported. Bam Adebayo scored 15 for Miami, it said.

Miami has now lost three straight season openers, the AP reported. That has happened only three times in team history, it said.

What we know: Minnesota won by 25 behind 45 points from Edwards.
What we don't: How Antetokounmpo and Ball will fit with their new teams over a full season.
