The San Francisco 49ers held on to beat the Washington Commanders 23-17 on Monday night at Levi's Stadium, improving to 6-0, the San Francisco Chronicle and NBC Sports Bay Area reported. It is the team's first 6-0 start since 2019, the Chronicle reported.

San Francisco went up 23-3 early in the second half before allowing two straight touchdowns that cut the lead to six, the Chronicle reported. Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels finished with 300 passing yards and two touchdowns, the Chronicle reported. Washington's offense gained 224 yards after halftime, compared with 72 for the 49ers, the Chronicle reported.

Safety Malik Mustapha made back-to-back big plays late, including a pass breakup on fourth down, to save the game, NBC Sports Bay Area reported. Defensive linemen Keion White and Romello Height then sacked Daniels as time ran out, NBC Sports Bay Area reported.

Quarterback Brock Purdy completed 21 of 29 passes for 264 yards and one touchdown, an 11-yard throw to tight end George Kittle on the opening drive, NBC Sports Bay Area reported. On that drive Purdy passed 1,500 career attempts and became the NFL's all-time leader in passer rating, moving ahead of Baltimore's Lamar Jackson, NBC Sports Bay Area reported. Running back Christian McCaffrey ran for 64 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries, NBC Sports Bay Area reported.

The win came with a worry. Star receiver Mike Evans, who had not practiced all week because of Achilles soreness, stayed down after his third catch late in the first half and limped to the locker room, the Chronicle reported. NBC Sports Bay Area reported that Evans left with an Achilles injury after catching three passes for 94 yards.

The 49ers lead the Seattle Seahawks by three games in the NFC West and play the Falcons in Atlanta next week, NBC Sports Bay Area reported.

What we know: The 49ers won 23-17 to reach 6-0, and Purdy now holds the NFL's career passer rating lead.
What we don't: How serious Mike Evans's Achilles injury is and whether he will miss time.
