Trump says 'mother of all bombs' isn't nuclear, eyes Iran's Pickaxe Mountain
President Donald Trump told Newsmax on Thursday that the bomb known as the mother of all bombs is not nuclear. He was asked about a CNN report, published early Thursday, that U.S. military plans could use it against Iranian sites if fighting resumes. Trump also said a strike on Iran's Pickaxe Mountain site may be needed.
President Donald Trump told Newsmax on Thursday evening that the U.S. might strike Iran's nuclear sites again, after CNN reported early Thursday that military plans include the largest non-nuclear bomb in the U.S. arsenal.
CNN reported shortly after midnight ET on Thursday, citing sources, that the U.S. military has drawn up plans that could use the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb, or MOAB, against Iranian energy sites and nuclear facilities, including a site known as Pickaxe Mountain, if Trump orders combat to resume. The weapon is often called the "mother of all bombs."
Asked about those reports in an interview on Newsmax's "Finnerty," Trump said the bomb is not nuclear. "No, it's not nuclear at all. This is just an extremely large bomb," he said, according to Newsmax. "It's like a tiny nuclear bomb."
Trump did not say whether he had approved using the weapon, Newsmax reported. "Now, we're looking at Pickaxe Mountain. We may have to go there," he said. Asked whether ground troops would be involved, he said, "No, I don't see that."
CNN reported that there are doubts about whether the bomb could destroy sites buried deep underground. The GPS-guided bomb can destroy an area about the size of nine city blocks, but it explodes above ground rather than burrowing in, CNN said. The bomb weighs about 21,600 pounds, Newsmax reported, and was first used in combat in 2017 against an Islamic State tunnel complex in Afghanistan.
CNN said the war with Iran is more than six months old. Trump told Newsmax that Iran is negotiating with the U.S. and that "the Iran war will be over very soon." The White House told CBS News that it does not comment on sensitive military plans, Newsmax reported.
What we know: Plans that include the MOAB exist, and Trump said publicly that the bomb is an option.
What we don't: Whether Trump will order new strikes, or when.
Where outlets agree CNN and Newsmax both report that the MOAB is the largest non-nuclear bomb in the U.S. arsenal and was first used in combat in Afghanistan in 2017.
Where they differ The outlets cited here report the same key facts so far.
