Judge throws out Trump administration lawsuit over New York City sanctuary laws
A federal judge in Brooklyn on Thursday threw out a Trump administration lawsuit against New York City's sanctuary laws. The judge said the U.S. had no right to sue and that federal law does not force cities to help with immigration arrests. Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the ruling a win for New Yorkers.
A federal judge on Thursday dismissed a Trump administration lawsuit that sought to block New York City laws limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, Reuters and Gothamist reported.
U.S. District Judge Ramón Reyes in Brooklyn found that the federal government lacked legal standing to bring the case, the outlets reported. He said the administration could not challenge a city law that bars police from holding immigrants at the request of federal authorities, because state law already prohibits that practice, Reuters said.
Reyes also ruled that city laws restricting local authorities from sharing release dates, locations or other custody information about immigrants were valid, because federal law does not require state and local governments to share that information, according to Reuters.
The judge rejected the administration's argument that federal law overrides the city's rules. Forcing local officials to assist with immigration enforcement would violate constitutional protections against federal overreach, Gothamist reported.
The Justice Department filed the lawsuit in July 2025 as part of its campaign against so-called sanctuary policies, Reuters said. The department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the ruling.
"This is a victory for New Yorkers and a rebuke to ICE's deportation agenda," Mayor Zohran Mamdani said, according to Gothamist. "The federal government came to court seeking to force New York City to turn its public servants into deportation agents and divert our resources toward carrying out ICE's cruel agenda. Today, they lost."
The ruling came one week after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot a man in the neck during an operation in Manhattan's Marble Hill neighborhood, which set off protests, Gothamist reported.
What we know: The judge dismissed the suit, finding no standing and no conflict with federal law.
What we don't: Whether the Justice Department will appeal the ruling.
Where outlets agree Reuters and Gothamist both report that Judge Ramón Reyes dismissed the suit, finding the government lacked standing.
