President Donald Trump said Thursday that Republican Sen. John Cornyn and strategist Karl Rove will be at fault if Ken Paxton loses the Texas Senate race, CNBC and the Washington Examiner reported.

"If Ken Paxton loses, it will be because of WEAK and INEFFECTIVE Political Hacks like John Cornyn and Karl Rove, who have ineffectively opposed me for my entire political career," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump said Cornyn and Rove "are doing everything possible" to hurt Paxton's chances against Democratic nominee James Talarico, the Examiner reported. He also wrote that Rove "shouldn't be allowed to spew his jealousy on FoxNews." Trump did not point to any specific action or statement by either man about Paxton, the Examiner said.

Paxton, the state's attorney general, beat Cornyn in the Republican primary after Trump endorsed him, CNBC reported. Cornyn has refused to endorse Paxton since losing the primary runoff in May, and he has not endorsed Talarico either, the Examiner reported.

Rove said at a Texas event last month that Cornyn would have been a stronger candidate. "If John Cornyn were the nominee, this race would be over," he said, according to the Examiner.

Recent polls show Talarico with a lead in the low-to-mid single digits over Paxton, CNBC reported. Texas has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 1988. Republican spending in the race has topped $370 million so far, according to AdImpact, CNBC said.

Trump urged Cornyn's supporters to vote for Paxton in the Nov. 3 election, the Examiner reported. Cornyn's office and Rove did not immediately respond to CNBC's requests for comment.

What we know: Trump blamed Cornyn and Rove in advance for a possible Paxton loss.
What we don't: Whether Cornyn or Rove will respond, and how the race moves before Nov. 3.
