Tyler Ulrich, a sophomore safety at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma, died Thursday, five days after he was hurt during a game against Ouachita Baptist, the school announced. He was 21, The Associated Press and Yahoo Sports reported.

Ulrich was injured during Southern Nazarene's 49-14 loss in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, on Saturday, Oct. 10. The game was delayed for nearly an hour while he received medical attention before he was taken to a hospital, the AP reported.

The Division II school called it a "traumatic injury" but did not reveal the cause of death or the nature of the injury, the AP said. Earlier Thursday, Ulrich's father, Mark, posted on Facebook that his son had suffered a head injury in the game, Yahoo Sports reported. In a later post, he wrote that his son had died at 11:13 a.m., Yahoo said.

"This loss is deeply felt across our campus," the school's athletics department said on X, according to the AP. School president Keith Newman said Ulrich died in the hospital "surrounded by the love, prayers, and presence of his family, teammates and dear friends," the AP reported.

Coach Dustin Hada wrote on X: "Man of God, ultimate example of quiet strength, loyal, worker, joyous. That's who Tyler was!!"

Ulrich, of Azle, Texas, was in his third season at the school and had started all six games this year, the AP said. He was third on the team in tackles, both outlets reported. Southern Nazarene, which is 1-5, canceled Saturday's game at Southwestern Oklahoma State, the AP reported. The school's official schedule lists that game for Oct. 17.

A GoFundMe for the Ulrich family had raised nearly $14,000 by Thursday afternoon, Yahoo Sports reported.

What we know: Ulrich died Thursday after an injury in the Oct. 10 game, and the school canceled its next game.
What we don't: The official cause of death and the exact nature of the injury.
