Spain's Rafael Jódar rallied to beat Norway's Casper Ruud 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Friday and reach the semifinals of the Shanghai Masters, Spanish public broadcaster RTVE and the newspaper La Vanguardia reported.

At 20, Jódar is the youngest player in the tournament's history to reach the semifinals, the outlets reported. La Vanguardia said he broke the record of Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas, who was 21 years and 2 months old when he did it in 2019. It said Jódar reached the last four in his first appearance at the event.

RTVE said Jódar, the 12th seed, lost the first set for the fourth match in a row. La Vanguardia said he wasted several break points in the first set before turning the match around. "It was a very hard match," Jódar said after the win, according to both outlets.

He will face Russia's Daniil Medvedev in the semifinal after Medvedev beat American Tommy Paul later on Friday, the Spanish newspaper El País reported. The tournament's official results list the score as 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina also reached the semifinals and will play Alexander Zverev, they said. Both outlets noted that Shanghai is the only Masters 1000 event a Spanish player has never won.

At his news conference, Jódar apologized for how he treated a ball kid in his previous match in Shanghai, RTVE reported. RTVE said he had sworn at the ball kid while asking for his towel, which earned him a warning and criticism in the media and online. "I should not have treated the ball kid like that, it was a mistake," he said, according to RTVE.

"I will try not to do it again," he said. He said the chair umpire made the right call with the warning, and that if he saw the ball kid again, he would try to tell him he was very sorry.

"I'm human and I make mistakes. I will learn from this mistake," he said, RTVE reported. Jódar's quotes are translated from Spanish.

What we know: Jódar beat Ruud to become the youngest semifinalist in Shanghai Masters history.
What we don't: Whether he can beat Medvedev to reach the final.
