The Milwaukee Brewers swept the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers out of the playoffs Thursday with a 6-4 win in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series, the AP reported. Milwaukee is headed to the World Series for the first time since 1982.

The Dodgers led 4-0 in the second inning. Andy Pages hit an RBI single, and Shohei Ohtani followed with a three-run homer, his first of this postseason, the AP reported. NBC News said the drive went 428 feet into the right-center field bleachers.

The Brewers chipped away. Jake Bauers hit a ground-rule double in the fourth to make it 4-2, and David Hamilton's single in the fifth scored Sal Frelick, NBC reported. Later that inning, Alex Vesia walked Bauers to force in the tying run, the AP said.

Garrett Mitchell led off the sixth with a 409-foot homer to center off Tanner Scott, putting Milwaukee ahead for the first time, the AP reported. Hamilton added a two-out solo shot off Edwin Díaz in the ninth. Aaron Ashby pitched three scoreless innings for a save. Bauers was named NLCS MVP.

"We weren't coming in to play patty-cake," manager Pat Murphy said, according to the AP. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, "I'm not used to those consolation speeches."

The loss ended the Dodgers' bid for a third straight title. Los Angeles took all four NLCS games against Milwaukee last year, the AP said. The Brewers led the majors with 103 wins this season, both outlets reported.

Milwaukee will host Cleveland or Tampa Bay in the World Series opener on Oct. 23, the AP reported. The Guardians lead the Rays 2-1 in the ALCS, NBC said. The franchise's only previous World Series, in 1982 when it played in the American League, ended in a seven-game loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, the AP said.

What we know: Milwaukee won the pennant and opens the World Series at home on Oct. 23.
What we don't: Whether Cleveland or Tampa Bay will be the opponent.
