WhatsApp has added a guest calling feature that lets anyone join a call without a WhatsApp account, The Verge and MacRumors reported Wednesday.

Guests can join by clicking a call link, both outlets said. They do not need to install the app, because WhatsApp added support for calls in its web version earlier this year, The Verge reported. Calls can be joined in a computer browser, MacRumors said.

The calls are end-to-end encrypted, meaning only the people in the call can hear them, both outlets reported. WhatsApp says the calls are free, have no time limit and support up to 32 people at once, MacRumors reported.

You still need an account to start a call, The Verge said. Users can start one from the Calls tab by tapping "+" to create a call link, MacRumors reported.

Guests always need the host's approval, both outlets said. They wait in a waiting room until the host lets them in, and the host can remove them at any time.

There are other limits for guests, both outlets reported. Guests cannot see other people's phone numbers, send messages or add anyone else to the call.

Guests can still use some features, such as screen sharing, emoji reactions and raising a hand to ask a question, both outlets said.

WhatsApp also plans to add Google and Outlook calendar tools later this year, both outlets reported. After installing a plug-in, users will be able to add a WhatsApp call link to calendar invites, The Verge said.

The new option is similar to a feature Apple added to FaceTime with iOS 15, MacRumors noted. Anyone can join a FaceTime call through a link.

What we know: Anyone with a link can now join a WhatsApp call as a guest.
What we don't: Exactly when the calendar tools will arrive.
