Bears' Montez Sweat suspended two games for violating NFL drug policy
The NFL suspended Chicago Bears defensive end Montez Sweat for two games for breaking its rules on banned drugs. He will miss games against the Falcons and the Patriots. Another Bears pass rusher, Dayo Odeyingbo, is also likely to miss Sunday's game with an injury.
The NFL has suspended Chicago Bears defensive end Montez Sweat for two games without pay for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances, ESPN and the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Sweat, 30, will miss Sunday's game at the Atlanta Falcons and the following home game against the New England Patriots, both outlets said. He will be eligible to return Oct. 23, ESPN reported.
The suspension also cancels all future guaranteed money in his contract, which runs through next season, the Sun-Times reported. That means the Bears could trade or release him without a big financial cost.
"We're disappointed whenever we lose a player of his caliber for multiple games," Bears coach Ben Johnson said Wednesday, according to the Sun-Times. "Not a whole lot for me to add on that."
The Bears will also likely be without defensive lineman Dayo Odeyingbo against the Falcons, the Sun-Times reported. He left Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers with a quad injury. Johnson said he was not sure how long Odeyingbo would be out, but the team does not plan to put him on injured reserve.
Chicago lost that game 31-7, ESPN said.
Sweat has seven tackles and two sacks in five games this season, ESPN reported. He led the Bears with 10 sacks last season.
The Bears traded a second-round draft pick to Washington for Sweat in 2023 and then signed him to a four-year, $98 million contract extension, the Sun-Times reported.
On Tuesday, the Bears brought back defensive end Shemar Turner from the physically unable to perform list, both outlets said. Turner, a 2025 second-round pick, will take Sweat's spot on the roster, ESPN reported. Johnson also named Austin Booker as a player who could see more time.
What we know: Sweat is suspended for two games and can return Oct. 23.
What we don't: How long Odeyingbo will be out.
