Keffe D Davis gets 40 years to life for Tupac killing
A Las Vegas judge on Tuesday sentenced Duane "Keffe D" Davis to 40 years to life in prison for the 1996 killing of rapper Tupac Shakur. Davis, 63, was convicted of first-degree murder in August and remains the only person ever charged in the case. He told the court he intends to appeal the conviction.
A judge in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Oct. 13, sentenced Duane "Keffe D" Davis to 40 years to life in prison for the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur. Judge Carli Kierny said Davis, 63, will get credit for time already served, CBS News reported.
A jury found Davis guilty on Aug. 31 after less than three hours of deliberation, FOX5 Las Vegas reported, and prosecutors later said they would dismiss the gang-related portion of the charge. Davis has remained in custody since his arrest in September 2023.
Speaking briefly in court, Davis asked only that investigators return the photographs and other belongings they had seized from his house. "No, I'm good. I'm going to appeal this case, for sure," he said when asked if he had more to say, Rolling Stone reported.
In an emotional victim impact statement, Shakur's sister, Sekyiwa "Set" Shakur, called her brother her protector and said, "He had so much promise." The judge rebuked Davis for publicly describing his role in the killing in a memoir and a television interview, then asking to live out his remaining years in peace. "It took us 30 years, but at this time, you are going to face justice," Kierny said.
Shakur, 25, was shot while stopped at a red light near the Las Vegas Strip on Sept. 7, 1996, and died six days later, and for decades no one was charged. The case came back to life after Davis spoke in public about riding in the white Cadillac that pulled up beside Shakur's car. Prosecutors said the shooting was payback for a beating of Davis's nephew, Orlando Anderson, at the MGM Grand hours before.
Defense lawyer Michael Sanft told jurors there was no proof beyond Davis's own words that he was even in Las Vegas that night. Davis, who has maintained his innocence, did not testify in his own defense during the two-week trial. The other men prosecutors placed inside the Cadillac have all since died.
