Hurricanes captain Staal out with torn calf
Carolina Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal will miss one to two months with a torn calf, coach Rod Brind'Amour said on Tuesday. Staal, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy during last spring's Stanley Cup run, was hurt in warmups before a game. The defending champions are already playing without winger Seth Jarvis.
Carolina Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal will miss "anywhere from a month to two months" with a tear in his calf, coach Rod Brind'Amour said on Tuesday, TSN reported. The Associated Press, in a story carried by Sportsnet, said Staal has a partially torn calf and will be out one to two months.
Staal was hurt during pregame warmups Sunday at Philadelphia, Brind'Amour said, according to the AP.
"It was just something he did in warmup: a freaky thing, but it is what it is," Brind'Amour said, according to both outlets. "Not good news there, but we've had a lot of injuries over the years and we're just going to have to keep figuring it out."
The Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup last spring, and Staal won the Conn Smythe Trophy for his contributions during that championship run, which included six goals in the final, both outlets reported.
The team is also without winger Seth Jarvis for the start of the season after shoulder surgery, the AP reported.
"He gets the tough matchups every night," Brind'Amour said, according to the AP. "No hiding that now. We're all going to have to step up a little more with those two guys out, in particular."
Jesperi Kotkaniemi figures to take Staal's spot in the lineup, and the Hurricanes are expected to call up a forward from the minors, the AP reported.
The 38-year-old centre is without a point in six games this season, TSN reported. He signed a one-year, $4.9 million contract extension last month and has 318 goals in 1,409 career games split between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Hurricanes, according to TSN.
What we know: Staal has a torn calf and is expected to miss one to two months.
What we don't: Exactly when he will return to the lineup.
