Burnham to host Zelensky, speeds missiles to Ukraine
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in London on Wednesday, the BBC and Reuters reported. Britain says it will speed up the delivery of air defence missiles to Kyiv. It is also drawing up new sanctions and pressing allies to keep up the pressure on Russia.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in London on Wednesday, the BBC and Reuters reported. Britain is using the visit to show it still backs Ukraine.
The UK said it will speed up delivery of air defence missiles to Kyiv. Reuters reported a planned £45 million package of surface-to-air missiles used against jet-powered Russian drones. It said £10 million of that will be fast-tracked to meet an urgent need. The BBC said the plan speeds up delivery of British Lightweight Multirole Missiles.
"My message to the Ukrainian people could not be clearer, we are with you for as long as it takes, and we will go further and faster in our support to back your courageous fight for peace in Europe," Burnham said, according to both outlets.
Burnham has asked officials to draw up more sanctions on Russia, both outlets reported. Britain is also pushing allies to follow it in banning maritime services for Russian liquefied natural gas exports.
The visit comes at a hard time for Zelensky. US President Donald Trump recently eased sanctions on Russian diesel exports. Zelensky called the deal a "gift" to Vladimir Putin, the BBC reported. Trump then called for new leadership in Ukraine, both outlets reported.
Britain has said it does not support the diesel deal, Reuters reported. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband described a "very difficult few days" for ties with the US, according to the BBC.
This is Zelensky's second visit to the UK since Burnham became prime minister. The first was in late July, the BBC reported.
