A student protest outside Albania's Ministry of Education in Tirana turned into clashes with police on Tuesday, Balkan Insight and Exit News reported.
Protesters threw rocks and eggs at the building, and police used tear gas and water cannon to break up the crowd, Balkan Insight reported. Exit News reported that police beat protesters with batons and dragged them through the streets. It said dozens were hurt.
Police said 23 protesters were detained and six officers were injured. In a statement, police said some protesters damaged the fence, gate, windows and front of the building. Police said some attacked officers "with Molotov cocktails, cans, stones and hard objects," Balkan Insight reported.
The Association of Journalists of Albania said a journalist was hurt by police and a news crew was blocked from reporting. It called on police to "immediately stop attacks on media and journalists," Balkan Insight reported.
The students want better conditions at schools and universities and more financial support. "We come to Tirana to study, and we are forced not to study but to work," one student said, Balkan Insight reported. Many also called for Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign.
The rally was part of the "Flamingo Revolution," a protest movement that began in late May, Exit News reported. It started as opposition to a luxury resort backed by Jared Kushner in a protected wetland where flamingos nest. It has grown into a broader revolt against corruption. Tuesday was the 136th straight day of protests, Exit News reported.
Rama was in Luxembourg on Tuesday, where Albania was set to close another chapter of its EU membership talks. Deputy Prime Minister Albana Kociu wrote on Facebook that violence "will never be a solution," Exit News reported.
