A poorly reviewed horror movie won the weekend at North American theaters, while a much-discussed drama about Facebook struggled.

"Other Mommy," a Universal and Blumhouse film starring Jessica Chastain, earned $27.5 million in its debut, according to studio estimates reported by Variety, Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter. The movie is about a sinister being that takes on the look of a young girl's mother.

It did well despite poor reactions. Variety says the film has a 19% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a D+ grade from CinemaScore audience polls. "Horror movies are generally immune to a negative reception, but this is extreme," analyst David A. Gross told Variety. "Business is going to drop sharply." Variety says the film also earned $17.69 million overseas, for a global start of $45.19 million.

"The Social Reckoning," written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, opened in fifth place with $5.5 million from 2,606 theaters. The film follows a Facebook whistleblower who leaks internal documents to a reporter. Variety says it was projected to open to $7 million to $8 million, and The Hollywood Reporter said the follow-up to "The Social Network" went quiet.

"Verity," the Colleen Hoover adaptation starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, fell to second in its second weekend. Deadline reported $11.5 million, down 64%, for a total of $53.9 million. Deadline said Hurricane Isaias cut into some weekend business in the South and along the Gulf.

Overall, the weekend took in about $85.157 million, up 18.5% from the same weekend last year, Deadline reported.

What we know: "Other Mommy" opened at No. 1 with $27.5 million, and "The Social Reckoning" opened fifth with $5.5 million.
What we don't: How fast "Other Mommy" will fall after its poor audience grades, and whether "The Social Reckoning" can find viewers.
