Commanders let clock run out, settle for 27-27 tie with Giants
The Washington Commanders and New York Giants tied 27-27 on Sunday after Washington let time expire in overtime while in field goal range. Jayden Daniels was tackled with seconds left and no timeouts. Coach Dan Quinn and Daniels both took the blame after the game.
The Washington Commanders had a chance to win in overtime on Sunday. Instead, the clock ran out, and the game against the New York Giants ended in a 27-27 tie.
The Giants had trailed 27-13 with less than eight minutes left in regulation, CBS Sports reported. Jameis Winston threw two touchdown passes to force overtime.
In overtime, New York reached the Washington 24 with a chance to win, but because kicker Dominic Zvada had already missed three field goals, the Giants tried to move closer instead of kicking right away. On the next play, Daron Payne knocked the ball loose from running back Cam Skattebo, and Washington recovered the fumble.
The Commanders moved to the Giants 24 with no timeouts left. Rachaad White ran for 2 yards with 55 seconds left, CBS Sports reported, but Washington huddled and let the clock run. On the final play, Daniels rolled to his left, never threw the ball and was tackled inbounds. CBS says eight seconds remained when he went down, which was not enough time for Washington to line up and spike the ball, and coach Dan Quinn reacted by throwing his headset to the ground.
"The right call is honestly like we can go clock it early and don't put ourselves in that spot," Quinn said, according to NFL.com. "That is my responsibility."
Daniels also took the blame. "We have to stop the clock. We have to know the situation," he said. "Ultimately, it's on me."
Giants coach John Harbaugh said he would likely play it the same way next time. "That field goal is very makeable, but it's not a gimme," he said.
The tie leaves the Giants at 3-1-1 and still in first place in the NFC East, while Washington falls to 1-3-1 after a game it had led by two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
