The Cleveland Guardians are headed to the American League Championship Series after a comeback for the record books.

Cleveland beat the Chicago White Sox 2-0 in Game 5 on a rainy Saturday night at Progressive Field, CBS Sports reported. The Guardians won the best-of-five series after losing the first two games. They are only the seventh team since 1995 to come back from 0-2 in a best-of-five series.

Guardians pitchers struck out 21 White Sox batters. That is the most ever in a nine-inning postseason game, The Guardian reported. The White Sox managed just three hits and put only nine balls in play. Chicago struck out 75 times in the series.

Gavin Williams led the way. Pitching on just one day of rest, he struck out 12 of the 21 batters he faced, ESPN reported. Two days earlier, he had earned the save in Game 4. He threw 5⅔ scoreless innings and allowed just one hit, Fox News reported.

Star José Ramírez gave Cleveland the lead with a home run on a pitch just above home plate.

"Very few people go wire to wire with phenomenal seasons," manager Stephen Vogt said. "You're going to go through ups and downs." The Guardians also came from behind in the regular season to win the AL Central.

Cleveland now plays at Tampa Bay on Monday night to open the ALCS. The team is chasing its first World Series trip since 2016. The franchise has not won a title since 1948, the longest drought in Major League Baseball.

In the National League, the Dodgers face the Brewers in the NLCS.
