Georgia made its case for the No. 1 ranking on Saturday night.

The second-ranked Bulldogs beat No. 6 Alabama 20-17 at Bryant-Denny Stadium, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. It was Georgia's first win in Tuscaloosa since 2007.

Georgia is now 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the Southeastern Conference. With No. 1 Texas losing to Oklahoma earlier in the day, the Bulldogs could rise to the top of the rankings.

Running back Dwight Phillips Jr. carried the Georgia offense with 120 yards on 17 carries. Quarterback Gunner Stockton completed 18 of 22 passes for 249 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. His biggest throw came late. Facing third-and-7 at his own 10-yard line with 2:36 left, he hit Elyiss Williams for a 17-yard gain.

The ending was controversial. Trailing by three with under four minutes left, Alabama reached field goal range, CBS Sports reported. The Crimson Tide tried a deep pass to Rico Scott in the end zone. Georgia safety KJ Bolden hit Scott before the ball arrived. It looked like pass interference, CBS said, but no flag was thrown.

Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer was furious and shouted at officials. Alabama later took a sack and punted on fourth-and-19. A personal foul let Georgia run out the clock, Saturday Down South reported.

Alabama fell to 5-1 and 3-1 in the SEC. It was the Crimson Tide's first loss of the season, and it came at home.

Georgia is in the driver's seat to reach the SEC Championship game again. The Bulldogs have won several recent conference titles under coach Kirby Smart.
