NBC fires 'Newlyweds' co-creator two weeks before premiere
Gail Lerner, who co-created NBC's new sitcom "Newlyweds" with Jamie Lee Curtis, says she was fired as showrunner over "creative differences." NBC confirmed the reason. The show stars real-life couple Téa Leoni and Tim Daly, and it still premieres Oct. 23 as planned.
NBC has fired the showrunner of its new sitcom "Newlyweds" before the first episode even airs.
Gail Lerner, who created the show with Jamie Lee Curtis, announced the news Friday on Instagram. "Here's the bad news: I got fired off it today. The reason I've been given is 'creative differences,'" she wrote. An NBC spokesperson confirmed that reason, The Hollywood Reporter said.
"Newlyweds" stars Téa Leoni and Tim Daly, who are married in real life. Leoni plays a free-spirited woman and Daly a buttoned-up professor who marry quickly after a whirlwind romance. Curtis also plays a recurring role as Daly's character's ex-wife, TheWrap reported. The show premieres Oct. 23.
Lerner said she was sad to leave "the most joyous TV experience of my life." She added: "The silver lining: the first six episodes were made under my leadership, and I wouldn't change a thing." She urged fans to watch and joked, "If you don't, keep it to yourself."
The show was filming its eighth episode Friday, according to Deadline and TheWrap. It has a break planned for next week, which NBC and the studio, Universal Television, are expected to use to find a new showrunner. Curtis is staying with the show.
Lerner is a TV comedy veteran. Her credits include "Black-ish," "Mixed-ish," "Will & Grace," "Happy Endings" and "Ugly Betty."
The show is part of NBC's push to bring back the multi-camera sitcom, filmed before a live audience. Curtis spoke up for that format in August. "This is network television," she said. People "want it for free."
Lerner said in August that Curtis brought her the idea during the pandemic. NBC picked it up in November 2025.
What we know: Lerner is out as showrunner, and the show still premieres Oct. 23.
What we don't: Who will replace her.
