Google has begun moving free users of the Gemini app to an "Auto" setting that picks a model for each prompt, 9to5Google reported late Friday, Oct. 9. Free users without a paid subscription can no longer switch models manually, and the site said the change had reached most of its free test accounts that evening.

Google's own wording, quoted by 9to5Google, says most prompts will go to Flash-Lite, "our fastest model," while "prompts that need deeper reasoning may go to Flash or Pro." If a user turns off smart model selection, every response comes from Flash-Lite.

Other coverage describes a harder line. The Next Web, citing Google's Gemini Apps Help page, reported that free personal accounts move to Flash-Lite only starting Oct. 9. The Verge reported earlier in the week that free users would be limited to Flash Lite and would need the $4.99-a-month AI Plus plan to use the standard Flash model.

Paying subscribers are affected as well, since AI Plus subscribers lose access to the Pro model, The Verge, The Next Web and Android Police reported. Pro and a reasoning mode called Deep Think stay with the AI Pro and AI Ultra plans. AI Pro costs $19.99 a month and AI Ultra starts at $99.99, The Verge reported.

Google is also adding effort levels. Users can choose low, medium or high thinking for each individual model, replacing a single "extended" option. Google's help page warns that a higher level gives "more thorough answers" but "will also use more of your limit," The Next Web reported.

The change is the latest squeeze on Gemini's free tier. In May, Google moved app users to limits based on how much computing they use, not how many prompts they send. Those limits reset every five hours up to a weekly cap, The Next Web reported. Android Police noted that Claude and ChatGPT also limit models on their free plans. It argued Google is freeing up resources for the public launch of its coming Gemini 4 Argon model.

To check your own account, open the model picker in the Gemini app, where free users should now see only the "Auto" option.

What we know: Free Gemini users now get Auto model selection, Flash-Lite handles most or all of their prompts, and low, medium and high effort levels are rolling out.
What we don't: Google has not said how often, if ever, free prompts will reach Flash or Pro under Auto.
