The Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 in a shootout Friday night at Nationwide Arena. Kent Johnson scored the only goal of the shootout, beating rookie Sergei Murashov with a quick shot from in tight.
Cam Talbot, 39, made 20 saves in his first game for Columbus and stopped all three Pittsburgh shooters in the tiebreaker. The win made him the first NHL goalie to win a game with nine different franchises, AP reported, breaking a record he had shared with three other goalies.
"To let these guys down would've been hard for me after the way we played," Talbot told The Columbus Dispatch.
Columbus controlled the game for long stretches and outshot the Penguins 45-22. Talbot faced just three shots in the first period, NHL.com reported.
Damon Severson opened the scoring with a one-timer off a cross-ice pass from Zach Werenski, in his first game back after six months of shoulder rehabilitation. Mathieu Olivier made it 2-0 in the second period.
Pittsburgh would not go away. Bryan Rust cut in from the left side and scored late in the second, and Evgeni Malkin tied it 3:19 into the third when an Erik Karlsson slap shot went in off his stick.
Murashov kept the Penguins in the game, stopping 43 of 45 shots, including a two-on-none rush in overtime.
"You saw a lot tonight how we want to play," Columbus coach Rick Bowness said.
The Penguins (2-2-1) have lost three straight after winning their first two games. They host the Dallas Stars on Saturday. The Blue Jackets (2-1-0) play at the St. Louis Blues on Saturday, the second night of a back-to-back.
