RAPTURE preworkout powder recalled nationwide over hidden stimulant DMAA
Leader Formulas of Tomball, Texas, is recalling one lot of RAPTURE preworkout powder nationwide because it contains DMAA, a stimulant not listed on the label. The FDA says DMAA can raise blood pressure and could lead to heart problems. Anyone who has it should stop using it.
A preworkout supplement sold to boost energy is being pulled from shelves. Leader Formulas LLC of Tomball, Texas, is voluntarily recalling one lot of RAPTURE Pre workout powder nationwide because it contains 1,3-dimethylamylamine, or DMAA, according to the company notice carried by USA TODAY.
DMAA is a stimulant. The supplement industry sometimes calls it "geranium extract," the FDA says. It was not on the RAPTURE label.
The FDA warned about this product earlier. In May, the agency told consumers not to buy or use RAPTURE Preworkout after lab tests confirmed the hidden ingredient. It said the product was sold on leaderformulas.com and possibly in some stores.
The health risk is to the heart. Using DMAA "can elevate blood pressure and could lead to cardiovascular problems, including heart attack, shortness of breath and tightening of the chest," the FDA said. Anyone who has had side effects should see a health care professional as soon as possible.
RAPTURE is a dietary supplement powder promoted to boost energy and increase performance, the FDA says. The company notice says it was sold at the consumer level.
The FDA says hidden drug ingredients most often turn up in products sold for weight loss, body building, sexual enhancement and pain relief. These are often marketed as "all natural." The agency says it cannot test every supplement on the market.
What should buyers do? Stop using the product, the FDA advises. Side effects can be reported to the FDA's MedWatch program online or by fax at 1-800-FDA-0178.
What we know: One lot of RAPTURE is recalled for undeclared DMAA, a stimulant linked to heart risks.
What we don't: How many containers were sold or whether anyone has reported getting sick.
Where outlets agree The FDA and the company recall notice both say RAPTURE contains DMAA, which can raise blood pressure and lead to heart problems.
Where they differ The FDA warned consumers about RAPTURE in May, but the company's recall of the lot came only this week.
