First Exorcist: Martyrs teaser lands; full trailer arrives Friday
Universal released a short first teaser for Mike Flanagan's The Exorcist: Martyrs, with the full trailer due Friday. Scarlett Johansson plays a New York detective who catches a serial killer called Father Sunday. The film opens in theaters March 12, 2027.
Mike Flanagan's new Exorcist movie finally has a name and a first look. Universal confirmed the title The Exorcist: Martyrs and released a short teaser, with the full trailer set for Friday, Oct. 9, Dread Central and ComingSoon reported.
The teaser opens with a woman looming at the top of a staircase, a nod to the famous stairs in the original film. It also shows Scarlett Johansson in character, a priest inside a huge church, and John Leguizamo strapped to an execution table, Dread Central said.
The story mixes a crime thriller with possession horror. Johansson plays New York homicide detective Julie Miller, who catches a serial killer known as Father Sunday, played by Leguizamo. She watches his execution, but things do not go as planned, according to details first shared by Esquire.
The cast also includes Sasha Calle as a fellow detective and Jacobi Jupe as Miller's 12-year-old son. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Laurence Fishburne play priests pulled into the case.
Flanagan, who writes, directs and produces, said he wanted something new. He compared his goals to blending films like Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs with The Exorcist. "We're talking about humans under the influence, or in some cases direct control, of evil itself," he told Esquire.
He also stressed that the film stands alone. "They're not seeing any attempt to reboot or remake or to step into the Friedkin film," he said, referring to director William Friedkin's original.
The film opens in theaters March 12, 2027.
