Rookie Lendeborg shines as Warriors rout shorthanded Lakers 124-98
Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg scored 17 points as the Golden State Warriors routed a shorthanded Los Angeles Lakers team 124-98 in a preseason game Tuesday in San Francisco. The Lakers rested Luka Doncic and sat Austin Reaves on the second night of a back-to-back. Stephen Curry played only about 14 minutes for the Warriors.
The Golden State Warriors got an early look at what their rookie can do. Yaxel Lendeborg scored 17 points as the Warriors beat the Los Angeles Lakers 124-98 in a preseason game Tuesday night at Chase Center, NBC Sports Bay Area reported.
Golden State led by 14 after one quarter and 81-53 at halftime. Stephen Curry was a plus-26 in about 14 minutes, and Draymond Green handed out eight assists in 15 minutes.
Lendeborg, the 11th pick in this year's draft, was told to be more aggressive after scoring four points in Sunday's preseason opener in Hawaii. He listened. He shot 7-of-10 in the first half, made both of his 3-point tries and led both teams with eight rebounds. Brandin Podziemski added 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting after a 2-of-10 night on Sunday.
Coach Steve Kerr also changed his starting five. Gui Santos replaced Al Horford, joining Curry, Podziemski, Lendeborg and Green. NBC Sports Bay Area said it could be the same group Kerr uses in the season opener, which is against the Lakers in Los Angeles.
The Lakers were playing for the second straight night, after a win in Sacramento on Monday. Austin Reaves (ankle), Walker Kessler (finger), Collin Sexton and Arthur Kaluma sat with minor injuries, and Luka Doncic, Matisse Thybulle and Ziaire Williams rested, Lakers Nation reported. Sandro Mamukelashvili scored 15 points in his first start for the team, and Jarred Vanderbilt had four steals.
Preseason games don't count, but they help coaches sort out minutes. Golden State is playing without Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody for now, so the young duo of Lendeborg and Podziemski may carry more of the load.
The schedule now flips. The Warriors play again Wednesday on the second night of their own back-to-back, and Curry, Green and Horford will not make the trip. The Lakers host Sacramento on Thursday at Crypto.com Arena.
What we know: Golden State's new starting group dominated a Lakers team missing its top stars.
What we don't: How much of this lineup Kerr keeps for opening night.
Where outlets agree NBC Sports Bay Area and Lakers Nation both report that Lendeborg starred in the first half while Doncic and Reaves sat for the Lakers.
Where they differ NBC Sports Bay Area says Curry scored 16 points in 14 minutes, while Lakers Nation credits him with 17 points in the first half.
